Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype

The Fitzpatrick skin phototype is a widely used system that classifies skin into six types based on how it responds to sun exposure—in particular, how easily it burns and how readily it tans. Developed by dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick in the 1970s, it runs from Type I (very fair skin that always burns and never tans) to Type VI (deeply pigmented skin that never burns). In medical aesthetics it is an important tool for planning treatments safely, because a person’s phototype helps guide the right settings for lasers, light-based devices and peels.

What is the Fitzpatrick scale?

The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin by the way it reacts to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun.[1][2] It was first described by the dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick in the 1970s and has become one of the most recognised tools in dermatology for describing skin type. Rather than judging skin by colour alone, it captures a functional trait: your skin’s tendency to burn and to tan. That response is largely determined by melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour and helps protect it from UV damage.

The six skin phototypes

  • Type I: Pale white skin—always burns, never tans
  • Type II: Fair skin—burns easily, tans minimally
  • Type III: Medium skin—may burn, then tans gradually
  • Type IV: Olive or light brown skin—burns minimally, tans easily
  • Type V: Brown skin—rarely burns, tans darkly and easily
  • Type VI: Dark brown to black skin—never burns, deeply pigmented

How your phototype is determined

Your phototype is worked out from a combination of your natural (constitutional) skin colour and your own history of how your skin behaves in the sun—how painful your sunburns tend to be and how much you tan.[1] Because it draws on personal experience rather than a single measurement, it is quick to assess in a consultation but also somewhat subjective. A practitioner will usually ask about your untanned skin colour and your typical reaction to strong sun to place you on the scale before recommending treatments.

Why it matters in medical aesthetics

Phototype is one of the most important safety factors in light- and energy-based treatments. Melanin in the skin absorbs laser and light energy, so higher-melanin (higher-Fitzpatrick) skin absorbs more of it—which raises the risk of burns and of pigment changes such as hyperpigmentation or lightening of the skin.[1] For that reason, treatments like laser and IPL are adjusted for darker skin using longer wavelengths, lower energy settings and longer pulse durations, and some devices are better suited to certain types than others.[1] The same principle guides how aggressively a chemical peel is used, since higher types can be more prone to post-treatment pigmentation. Knowing your phototype helps your provider choose the safest, most effective approach.

Limitations of the scale

Useful as it is, the Fitzpatrick scale has limits. It relies on self-reported burning and tanning, which can be subjective, and it was originally designed around lighter skin, so it can be less precise for the full diversity of skin tones and does not fully capture how any individual’s skin will pigment.[1] It is best treated as a helpful starting framework rather than a complete picture—an experienced clinician also considers your ethnic background, your history of pigmentation (such as melasma or scarring) and how your skin has responded to treatments before.
